The Zambia Link 2007
St Bernard Mizeki, Mufilira. | Mufulira is a mining town in the Copper Belt area of Northern Zambia. There is a very active link between Castle Cary and Mufulira – especially between the churches and the schools. Students from Ansford Secondary School are able to make exchange visits with students from Mufulira High School. Castle Cary Primary School and Winter Muleya Basic School are linked and there has been a teacher exchange. Churches Together in Castle Cary and Ansford have also raised money to refurbish the Home Economics room there. There are regular visits to Mufulira through the Intro Zambia Project for anyone who wishes to go.
Rev Japhet Ponda is now priest in charge of our linked Parish of St Bernard Mizeki, as well as the neighbouring Parish of St Cyprian. He was ordained to the Priesthood on 18th August 2007 and is hoping to marry his fiancée Lucy in November.
It was a great pleasure for our Vicar, John Pescod and his wife, Jane to visit Mufulira at the end of March and a privilege to celebrate Communion in St Bernard’s on Palm Sunday and St Cyprian’s on Easter Day. They could not have been made more welcome.
We were able to send Japhet a white stole for his ordination and he wrote to us expressing his gratitude and telling us of the growth of the churches there – they recently had 28 people confirmed. We are hoping for an ongoing, close link between the Parishes in the future and we would like to be able to arrange for Japhet and Lucy to visit Castle Cary, perhaps next year. Please pray for Japhet, Lucy and all the people of St Bernard Mizeki Church who are praying regularly for us. |
